The Summer Gardens are almost as old as the city. It is existing since 1704.
The project of Summer Garden was made by Peter I himself. Rare trees and flowers were supplied from al l over Russia, and also from Holland.
In the beginning XVIII century, decoration of the alleys of Summer Garden began, with marble sculptures by the Venetian masters of Italy.
By 1707 much of the work on laying out the gardens, planting the trees and setting up the fountains had been completed. In the early 18th century the Summer Gardens occupied a much larger territory: from the Neva bank and almost reaching Nevsky Prospekt.
It was a regular garden with a geometrical pattern of crossing alleys and with trimmed shrubs, symmetrically arranged statues and fountains.
Magnificent marble statues made by Italian sculptors and a famous cast iron grille decorate the Summer Garden.
In 1784 the Summer Garden was separated from Neva by amazing beautiful lattice.
