THE ROSTRAL COLUMNS

Intended to serve as beacons in front of the Exchange, the columns were erected in 1810 by Th. de Thomon.
The figures at their bases symbolize four Russian rivers — the Volkhov, the Dnieper, the Neva and the Volga. They were designed by an unknown artist and carved in stone by S. Sukhanov.
